Debian

What I would like in my next install

I have been running Sid but I think that I would like less excitement and more reliability than sid offers

In order of priority I would like:

  • Debian Base

    • The latest stable kernel (if you can get everything to work)
    • a journaling file system (I'm no expert so I'll leave which one to you)
    • Video with full 1240x768 (all ready works in my install)

Upgrading from Ext2 fs to Ext3 fs

After having much trouble with my laptop (me stuffing things up) I descided to convert my FS from Ext2 to Ext3. The upgrade was relatively painless following the instructions on "Using the ext3 filesystem in 2.4 kernels"

And as always thanks to John (who maintains this site) for pointing out that I hadn't specified the device.

System Administration on Aktiom Debian Virtual Dedicated Server

This section of this book documents system administration issues that I encountered while setting up the Wilderness Societies website on an Aktiom Debian Virtual Colocated Server (also know as a Virtual Dedicated Server). Generally administration on a Virtual Dedicated server is exactly the same as on a real Dedicated Server, however there is one major difference.

Changes to defaults for Kernel 2.4.20 (attempt 5)

This is a complete listing of the fith version of changes I made to the default options for Kernel 2.4.20 to get it to work on the Fujitsu Lifebook P2120. This kernel attempt, boots fine but without Ethernet, USB or APM working (there were only minor changes to the second, third and fourth attempts and neither even booted)

Compiling the Kernel for Power Management on the Cruseo chipset

  1. To start with I downloaded the source for kernel 2.4.20

    evan@wazza-dunnart:/usr/src/kernel-source-x.x.x$ apt-get install kernel-source-2.4.20

  2. I then did a cache search (in unstable) for transmeta

    evan@wazza-dunnart:/usr/src/kernel-source-x.x.x$ apt-cache search transmeta

  3. Transmeta bought up a list of files which I installed

    evan@wazza-dunnart:~$ apt-cache search transmeta
