Third attempt (December 2004)

I downloaded the new version of the Debian Installer and sent it off to work.

It asked me some very simple questions then asked me which types of packages I wanted.
I chose:
Desktop
Web
File server
and something else which I can't remember at the moment. It then downloaded the various applications for each catagory and after 2.5 hours it was ready for me to do something again.

The only thing it didn't do was accurately detect my video card. I switched to another terminal and ran lspci and came up with VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M6 LY (see "Fujitsu P2120 product specs (From Fujitsu and by probing)" for a full list of PCI devices on the laptop)

The next issue was setting the Display manager to KDM

When I installed KDM it asked me whether I wanted KDM or GDM as my display manager. I chose KDM.

To get the screen resolution set correctly in X, I just used point 4 of my notes on Getting X to work (I wish it was so easy for my desk top).
