Generating your own CD

  1. To generate the CD I created a directory/folder (usually called "Software") on my local hard disk and downloaded all the latest versions of the software I wanted, saving them to the following directories/folders.
    • Windows - for all open source software that runs on MS Windows
    • Run_from_CD - for windows applications that don't require installation
    • Free_Software - for free, proprietry software, like Adobe Reader, Macromedia Flash plugin and a couple of others
    • Mac_software - for all open source software that runs on Mac OS X
  2. I edit my HTML pages to make sure they are up todate and have the correct file names and paths for the install links
  3. Because I use a website to help generate my HTML files
    1. I view the HTML pages through a browser,
    2. then using the browser I view the source code
    3. copy and paste the source code into a text editor (I use notpad.exe but you could use Amaya if you wanted.)
    4. I do a "Find & Replace" to change all the .shtml to .html (for some reason browsers don't like .shtml served from a CD)
    5. I save the files using the same name as I the originals on the website to Software (on my computer) but you may have a different name
    6. I then go through all the links using Internet Explorer and check that they all work (fixing the ones that don't). If all is working the Install Win32 and Run from CD links should all bring up a "File Download" dialog box asking if you would like "Run this program from its current location" or "Save this program to disk"
  4. The when you are happy that all is ready and working. You can burn a CD

Note: If you are using the HTML pages served up the website I use, could you please remove "in the TWS Sydney Office 02 9282 9553" from every page.

If you are after something simpler checkout TheOpenCd Project They offer a CD which you can download whole. No mucking about with downloading lots of packages and creating your own CD. It looks really good. I will start using some of the software that they recomend.

The main difference between TheOpenCD Project and this is that I include the latest versions free proprietry software, and that I update all the software versions every month.
